HUMANISM IN Uganda : A TIRING EFFORT
Humanism in Uganda isn’t an easy thing to practice, not when society is so rigid especially stemming from those who claim to be so religious. I use the word claim coz they actually are not even near to what they profess. Its still a long way when Uganda will get to a level of diiferentiating between religion and state.
In fact I do now understand why some people didn’t want any word to do with God in the American motto since many here use the country’s motto “For God and my Country as a reference when trying to invoke the aspect of never forgetting religious values when dealing with public issues. A case in point is the still pending Homosexuality bill still in languishing somewhere in the corridors of parliament. To most who are pro the bill its about fighting for God’s stipulations never mind the fact that most of the provisions in te bill are unrealistic. Ours is a society of u are either with us or them . To them if you oppose the bill then you are also homo. Not looking beyond their noses they forget how African governments can use such laws to persecute opponenets or even individuals to settle domestic scores.
The bill says that a parent suspecting his child to be gay should report the child to authorities,. Is it really realistic? I know of mothers who can prove beyond doubt that their child is a criminal but will openly assert that he is innocent. Not to report the child there fore is a criminal offence. So is it if one is your friend , neighbour or whatever. Such laws I have only heard of in cases of treason but when its reduced to this level then any sober head need to worry. My Uganda has enough problems top care about before we put our energies into homophobia. The bill proposes death as a punishment for those caught in the act but then what of the numerous politicians that we have around us that stink corruption. Why don’t we first go for those? These people for instance who embezzle money meant for AIDS patients, Tb sufferers and those sick of malaria are more dangerous to society than someone who is pervert in his sex acts. Its time our leaders felt shame and prioritized what problems should come first.
